Summer Reading
Published June 27, 2007 by John
One of the advantages of a June birthday is to replenish my book stack just at the right time. Even if it's not exactly vacation time for all of us, the slivers of time I get to spend in the hammock or resting at the pool are opportunities I'll take. This year I got a good mix of styles:
- Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, by Barbara Kingsolver. A year of living intentionally on food gathered locally and seasonally, journaled in her wonderfully relaxed and poetic voice. A great reminder of the deep value to be had from your own garden bed or the farmer's market, conveyed with beautiful storytelling.
- iWoz, by Steve Wozniak. An autobiography of the geeky side of the colorful Apple founding duo. He obviously didn't earn his fame as a writer, but his sheer enthusiasm seems like it may make up for that.
- Original Zinn, by Howard Zinn. I've picked up many books in bookstores that look really really interesting, only to hear the little voice in my head say "that may look good but it's long and dense; be real, you will never finish it". This is one that quiets that voice. Interviews and conversations with a fascinating historian in a package that I might finish by the end of the year.
So far I’m enjoying them, but I’m missing fiction on this stack so I’m hunting for a good story to fill the gap.

Update: My dad came through, handing off a copy of Bang The Drum Slowly, by Mark Harris. Baseball players are the backdrop, but it’s not about baseball. It also sounds like it beat the odds and made a great film.
