Finally Bifocals

Published November 1, 2006 by John

My eye doctor was right, as he has always been. First, he told me at 40 that I would be wearing bifocals within two or three years, max. Then at my appointment last December he told me that I could use them now, but that he would leave it up to me when to fill the prescription he filled out since it didn’t “hurt” (read: I could still compensate enough that I wasn’t complaining.)

I put it off until last week, when the “hurt” was getting to me, and got my prescription filled. What my doctor didn’t tell me, though, was that progressive lenses (the no-line bifocals) could be a challenge. I didn’t hear about that until the Sears Optical Center person asked if I knew how to use progressives. Uh, I don’t just look through them? If only it were that simple.

Having now tried them, read about them, and talked to others who have them I at least don’t feel alone in my experience. When I was explaining to my mom that I need to get used to moving my head to look at things instead of moving my eyes, she astutely said “so, it sounds like you are an owl now.”

Who who.
