Beyond Toons

Dilbert is a great cartoon, and so is This Modern World, but they’re short and/or infrequent, and constrained to their world. I know that writing witty pearls on a regular deadline is a merciless taskmaster, and with spinoffs and other projects of a successful cartoon, I can imagine the cartoonist’s day as a very full one. But when I like a writer, I wonder what makes their mind tick. Or maybe what more they may have to say that doesn’t fit in the bounds of their cartoon.

The world of the blog is a release valve for a lot of people, and while the quality of blogs varies tremendously, with writers or cartoonists, you have an idea of what their writing may be like. The Dilbert Blog, for instance, is the place for Scott Adams to turn his lens on more of the world than just the office. This Modern World blogs pretty close to the character of the cartoon, but it can be more expansive and frequent, albeit with the same editorial filter. I’ve checked out Dave Barry’s blog occasionally, but it is mostly links to wierd news that that readers send in, with him choosing the best.

Of course, then there is Gary Trudeau who did someblogger roasting in his Doonesbury strip last year. Gary Trudeau does not have his own blog.
